Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Summer Institute cost?
The Institute is FREE to attendees; however, we request a $65 refundable registration deposit to discourage NO-SHOWS. Registration deposits will be cheerfully refunded to participants who attend all their workshops at the Summer Institute or those who cancel on or before the cancellation date (July 7, 2017).
Do I have to attend all four days of the Summer Institute?
No, but you are certainly welcome to. In order to receive a refund of your registration deposit, you MUST attend all of the workshops you register for or cancel by July 7, 2017.
What will my expenses be?
You will be responsible for your dinners and transportation. Breakfast and lunch are provided each day to workshop attendees. Additionally, Travel Grants are available on a competitive basis to defray the costs of lodging. We encourage you to register early and apply for a Travel Grant if eligible, as the grants are in limited supply this year.
What is a travel grant?
Travel Grants are available to defray the cost of attending the Summer Institute. They provide reimbursement for lodging costs for the nights before the workshops attended. The SI will reimburse for double occupancy (half the cost of the room), for the amount indicated on the hotel receipt, up to a maximum of $23.75/night (plus 7% city tax) at Inn of the Hills Hotel and Conference Center. The SI will not reimburse for incidentals (room service, internet service, in room movies, long distance phone or other charges). Please allow 10 weeks for the reimbursement check to arrive.

NOTE: The Early Bird registration period has passed. We have had overwhelming response and thank all for their interests. Please note that for Travel Grants Awarded on or after April 2, 2017, SI will only be able to fund 50% of the double occupancy award amount. Early Bird Registrants who where awarded prior to April 2, 2017 will be reimbursed at a maximum of $47.50 per night + 7% city tax ($50.83/night). Awards made after April 2, 2017 will be reimbursed at $23.75 per night + 7% city tax ($25.42/night). We appreciate your understanding as we stretch our limited travel funding to as many attendees as possible and look forward to seeing you at the Summer Institute.
What about overnight lodging at the Summer Institute?

You are responsible for making your own hotel reservations and paying for those room nights.  We have arranged for a block of rooms at the Inn of the Hills Hotel and Conference Center.  Please call them directly and provide your credit card number to secure your reservation for all nights.  Please be aware that if you receive a Travel Grant, we will reimburse room charges (double occupancy - half the cost of the room); up to a maximum of $23.75/night (plus 7% city tax) at Inn of the Hills Hotel and Conference Center or any other hotel of your choosing.  Please see more information at the Travel Grants section of this website.

Be sure to mention you are with the Summer Institute to receive a discounted rate. A limited number of rooms have been set aside, so availability is on a first come, first served basis. Reservations must be made before June 23rd, 2017.  After that, discounted rooms will no longer be available.

Lodging: If you are traveling to the Summer Institute from a distance of greater than 35 miles, you are eligible to apply for a Travel Grant to cover the cost of lodging. Lodging will be reimbursed for the nights before workshops that you register for and attend (i.e., Sunday night for Monday workshop). To reduce costs, double occupancy is required. The SI will reimburse for double occupancy (half the cost of the room), for the amount indicated on the hotel receipt, up to a maximum of $23.75/night (plus 7% city tax) at Inn of the Hills Hotel and Conference Center or other hotel of your choice. These are discounted blocks at Inn of the Hills Hotel and Conference Center until June 23rd, 2017. We encourage you to book your room ASAP, as these spots fill up very quickly. Please be aware that the SI cannot reimburse state tax.

How do I get reimbursement?
To get reimbursement of lodging, up to a maximum of $23.75/night (plus 7% city tax) at Inn of the Hills Hotel and Conference Center or any other hotel of your choosing, the attendee must:
1. Provide a hotel receipt with his/her name on the top and showing a zero balance. Hotel receipts can have only one guest name at the top. The SI cannot reimburse state tax.
2. Attend all the workshops for which he/she is registered (or alternates arranged at the Institute, as space permits) and sign in on attendance sheets in the AM and PM.

4. Provide a correct mailing address for routing of the reimbursement check.

What should I bring to Summer Institute?
We recommend that you bring:
- Your curiosity, passion, and a sense of humor!
- Comfortable clothing. For workshops that have outside activities, it is suggested that you have sturdy, closed toed shoes, light clothing with sleeves and long pants, sunscreen, hat, bottled water.
- Your iPad, tablet or laptop, for workshop activities and to complete online evaluations.
How many days can I attend the Institute?
Daily workshops are available for each grade band. You are welcome to attend the entire 4-day Institute.

Please see the TRAVEL GRANTS section of this website for complete instructions.
Does the Summer Institute reimburse for mileage?
No. Please seek mileage/transportation costs from your home school or district.
What about meals during the Institute?
The Summer Institute provides 2 meals per day, breakfast and lunch, on Monday-Thursday. Breakfast is served at the Inn of the Hills Conference Center from 7:30 AM-8:45 AM. Lunch will be served from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM. Workshops will have an assigned, 1-hour lunch time. Dinner is on your own.
When are the workshops?
The workshops are all full day and run from 9:00 AM sharp to about 4:00 pm on Monday July 24 – Thursday July 27. There is a 1 hour lunch break and a short afternoon coffee break each day.
What will I receive at the workshops?
Outstanding training from workshop developers, content experts (SCIENTISTS, PHYSICIANS, ENGINEERS) and master teachers. Each workshop will include a review of content information and effective pedagogical approaches, hands-on activities, and take home, classroom ready, lesson and activity plans. The SI is accredited to provide 7 hours of CE and TAGT credits for each workshop. All attendees will receive free breakfast and lunch each day. For those who are traveling from outside a 35-mile radius of the venue, TRAVEL GRANTS are available to defray the cost of lodging (please see Travel Grants section).
Why am I being asked to provide a REGISTRATION DEPOSIT of $65 if the Institute is FREE?
The registration deposit is collected to discourage “no shows.” The Registration deposit ($65) will be cheerfully refunded, within 5 working days, if you:

2. Cancel your SI registration by July 7, 2017.
Do you evaluate the Institute?
Yes. We ask all participants to evaluate the training, benefit and impact of the Summer Institute. All evaluations are anonymous, and the responses are separated from any identifying information. Evaluation surveys are online, and include:
1. Short, formative surveys at the Institute - one for each workshop you attend, and one for the Institute as a whole, and
2. A longer, summative survey - a link will be sent to you via e–mail in the Spring of 2018.
